Crushing On: Crispy Pork Belly

Crush Level: 3/5

Date Of Visit: 26/09/2015

Healeys Lane is like a hidden treasure for food enthusiasts in Melbourne. Lots of inexpensive but pleasurable food are hidden there.

One day, my friends and I decided to visit a Thai restaurant located in Healeys Lane called Mr Nice Guy. The restaurant was quite small, but it felt homey.

Milk Iced Tea ($4.50)
Refreshing hints of sweetness.

Chicken Pad See Ew ($15.90)
The rice noodle’s texture was perfectly chewy and smooth. But the flavor was overly sweet, and it was a little greasy.

Crispy Pork Belly ($24)
Juicy fatty pork belly and the oyster sauce foam. It was an enjoyable dish. Moreover, the healthy Chinese broccoli balanced out the grease.

Overall, the dishes were quite likable, despite the need of improvement. I wouldn’t say that they serve the best Thai food in Melbourne. But, I’d recommend Mr Nice Guy if you are craving for an okay Thai delicacy in the city and just want to have a meal in a homey style restaurant.

Crushing On: Strawberry Milkshake, Eggs Benedict with Baked Mushroom

Crush Level: 4/5

Date Of Visit: 27/08/2015

The cold freezing weather did not stop my roommate and me to brunch at this cozy restaurant near Melbourne University. Its simple, and cozy interior, and also its strategic location, inspire people (especially students) to come and relax at the restaurant.

Strawberry Milkshake ($6)
The taste of strawberry in the glass was extremely mesmerizing. Bright strawberry flavor with exceptional slightly creamy texture.

Eggs Benedict w/ Baked Mushroom  ($12.50)
It was written on the menu that a poached egg will be served, but the egg on the plate was medium to hard cooked. On the other hand, the vegetables neutralized my mouth from the heavy but tasty hollandaise sauce. It was quite a smart and creative approach on eggs benedict. I bet if the egg were runnier, I’d feel sick of the dish.

Potato Croquettes ($3.50)
Sadly, I didn’t manage to try this one. My roommate opted for it, and she said the croquettes were super crunchy, and each bite provided a lip smacking taste.

Chocolate Rocky Road Waffles ($14)
Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.  The waffle mingled well with the straight up sweet and fruity flavors from the banana fritters, rocky road crumble, hot chocolate sauce, and the fairest vanilla ice cream. It’s an expressive decadent dessert.

Based on what I’ve tried, the food was delightful. Besides, the staff was undeniably friendly. I’d love to relax and do my assignments in this cozy restaurant.  Would definitely suggest this place to anyone.

Crushing On: Coq Au Vin & Wagyu Cheek Beef Fettuccine

Crush Level: 3.5/5

Date of Visit: 24/08/2015

Prana Chai
Aromatic spices and warm aftereffect. It’s an excellent comfort drink.

Coq Au Vin, Milawa Free Range Chicken & Red Wine ($29)
The rich wine flavor heartwarmingly seeped into the moist chicken.

Wagyu Beef Cheek & Marjoram Ragu ($27)
The mixture of seasonings played well together. The super tender beef cheek and the soft pasta were another pleasant compliments.

Rosemary Polenta Chips ($8)
Mushy on the inside and crisp on the outside. Would love to taste a slightly more piney yet pungent flavor of rosemary.

Overall, our lunch was positive but I wouldn’t say it was out of this world.  Kind staff, pleasant food, and luxurious interior, well, it was worth the visit. I’d love to go back and try their brunch menu.

Pho Chu The - Richmond

Address: 270 Victoria Street, Richmond, Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Phone: 03 9428 7797

Staff: Friendly & Helpful

Price: AUS$3-12

Crushing On: Pho with Sliced Beef and Beef Ball

Crush Level: 4/5

Date Of Visit: 22/08/2015

Pho Chu The is a pho restaurant that has started operating since 1989. Chu means Uncle, and The is the name of the owner. So, Pho Chu The means pho by Uncle The. The restaurant itself was far from fancy, but anyone would feel comfortable dining here.

Pork Spring Rolls
Let it be known that sweet and sour are the best combination of flavors ever! I love the sauce, but the spring rolls were not crunchy enough. I have had more crunchy spring rolls elsewhere.

Pho with Sliced Beef and Beef Balls ($10)

Apparently, you can choose from either a small portion, medium or large. As I did not want to be greedy, I opted for the small one. And actually, it was not as small as I thought it would be.

The broth was quite rich, but the sliced beef and beef balls were completely tender. Far more delicate than other pho places. Mind you, there was some tendon in the beef balls, but they were still lovely.

Also, the rice noodle was soooo smooth. You just need to slurp it and swallow it down, no need for chewing.

3 Colors Sweet ($4)
It’s a work of art! Generously topped with a variety of flavorful toppings. It made onlookers gazing lustily at this beautiful drink.

No wonder this pho restaurant has been successful for 26 years. The pho was just delicious. Furthermore, I love the fact that it serves free warm tea rather than still water. I also like the quick service. If it’s located in CBD, I will visit it almost every day.

Address: 334 Flinders Lane (Cnr Flinders Lane and Fulham Place), Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Phone: 03 9620 3335

Staff: Some are helpful, some are just ridiculous

Food Price: AUS$6-21

Crush Level: 2/5

Date Of Visit: 14/08/2015

My mom has always said how excellent Vapiano’s pasta is in London. So, when I realized they also open a restaurant in Melbourne, I had no hesitation to ask my friends to accompany me to visit it. Vapiano is an Italian restaurant that operates like a food court. When you arrive at the restaurant, the front desk (cashier) will give you a card for each person. This card is to be presented to the staff every time you order a dish from the station.

Spaghetti Carbonara ($19.90)
I was surprised that the pasta was far from what my mom said. While the flavor was top notch, the pasta itself was excessively dry. It was as if I am riding on a camel in a desert, trying to find a fata morgana but what I get is only drought.

Fusilli Carbonara ($19.90)
This one was a little bit better than its sibling. It was not as dry as the previous one. BUT! The pasta was a tad hard, not al dente. Al dente is supposed to be cooking pasta slightly firm to bite, but this one was just too hard.

Risotto Gamberi ($20.90)
Good consistency but it was destructively sour.

My friends and I were clearly disappointed with what we had for lunch. All of the dishes were sloppily prepared. To add to it, the cashier did not mention that students can get a discount, she only asked us after we paid for our lunch. She said,"Oh I'm sorry I did not know but oh well you can get a discount the next time you ate at the restaurant." What a ridiculous marketing strategy! Even if I would get a discount, I would not recommend and come back to this place. This branch is a major embarrassment to Vapiano.
